A real treasure

I came across this Bijbel on a recent weekend in Gympie...

This pocket sized Dutch Bible belonged to my Grandmother, Theodora (Dora) Gerritsen. She came from a small town in Holland, only 60km from where Mitch and I are soon to be living. It's a beautiful old Bible and I feel very special to be entrusted with looking after something so precious.

When flicking through the delicate old pages, I discovered that Grandma had underlined only a few verses in the entire Bible. As this would have been considered defacing a book in her time and frowned upon, I knew that these verses must have been of particular importance.

The translation reads (Hebrews 13: 5-6) ... be content with what you have because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you". So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can human beings do to me?" ...

My grandparents (and their children, including my Dad) lived through the second world war in Holland and I can't even begin to imagine how difficult their lives must have been during this time. I like to think that these verses provided Grandma with much needed comfort and reassurance that everything in life is in God's control.

Although I sadly never knew her, like this precious Bijbel, I believe Grandma Gerritsen was a real treasure...
