Wandering Wednesday - Perisher Blue, Australia

All this snow play over the last week got me thinking about the last time I went skiing (outdoors that is) - at Perisher Blue in August last year. Perisher is located here, in New South Wales. I was visiting a good friend in Canberra for a couple of days during winter and so we decided to take a day trip to the ski resort for a spot of skiing - and playing in the snow of course. I'd skied before in New Zealand and Switzerland but this was my first time on an Aussie ski slope. I have to say, although it was odd seeing gum trees and snow in the same landscape, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

I know a lot of people go there for a longer holiday, but as I had limited time we had booked a package from Canberra that for a reasonable price gave us a return bus fare from the city centre, gear rental & a lift pass for the day. The bus dropped us off at the ski rental shed and once we had donned our uncomfortable ski boots (which always result in that attractive waddle walk) and picked up our skis, we took the short train ride up to the ski resort. It was a big day but having it all pre-booked this way made it completely do-able - and a lot of fun!

I'm no expert skier so I can't really comment on the runs. But I can say, there were enough easier runs to keep an amateur like me entertained (and enough runs with frightening names like the roller coaster for me to assume more experienced skiers would be kept on their toes), the lines at the lifts were not painfully lengthy and the chair lifts themselves were the least scary I have ever seen - I managed to not get trapped under a single one all day, a new record!!!

Like I've said before, I sometimes bore easily when skiing - the lure of making snowmen, eating snowcones, rolling down hills (intentionally - it's not so fun when it happens with skis on) and throwing snowballs is sometimes too much for me. But really, it's playing in the snow that's half the fun - and so my friend and I had the most fabulous day going between ski runs and making snow angels. Although all skiing I'm going to be doing in the next couple of years is more then likely to now be in Europe, if I were to go skiing again in Australia I'd definitely go back to Perisher Blue - it was a great day out :-)
