Wandering Wednesday - Arosa, Switzerland

All this snow and the start of the Christmas season has gotten me thinking about our last white Christmas, in Switzerland. We spent Christmas Eve through Boxing Day in the little ski resort village of Arosa, located here in the German speaking region of Switzerland. I can't remember why we chose to stay in Arosa - I think perhaps it had something to do with the number of websites advertising the fact that it's a town filled with cute little squirrels (we had never see a squirrel at that point). After a spectacular day on the Glacier Express from Zermatt, we changed trains in Chur and caught a local train out to Arosa. The ride in was impressive, even after a day on the Glacier Express - we traveled on some pretty high bridges to get to the little ski village. It was dark by the time we arrived and after picking up our ski passes and checking in at the hotel, we took a walk around the village, trying not to fall over on the slippery ice as we got lost in the pitch black of the town.

The town itself was fairly nondescript - just another ski village, this one on a lake. But the location - wow. There's a reason why we got a photo of the mountains put onto canvas - they were unbelievable.

We spent Christmas Eve skiing on perfectly groomed runs - Arosa was a fantastic place for beginners like us. We could ski from the top of the mountain all the way to our hotel door on easy runs!

With rather sore legs, we spent Christmas Day ice skating outdoors and hiking on many mountain paths through the snow (stopping for mulled wine and treats along the way of course) and in the last hours of sunlight, took a walk along the 'squirrel' trail near our hotel - sadly, no squirrels were spotted but a few snow angels appeared out of nowhere :-) The walking paths on the mountainside were fantastic and well laid out - plenty to do for a non skier. It was a gorgeous sunny day, there were horses and sleighs jingling on the mountainside and with the Christmasy atmosphere in the air, it was an awesome introduction to a white Christmas... I can't wait for the next one!!!
