Wandering Wednesday - Poon Hill, Nepal

Poon Hill was the goal when we bought a Lonely Planet trekking guide to Nepal and decided to tackle the Himalayas in a week long hike back in 2009. Mitch handed in his thesis and we flew out the very next day, excited to finally see the Himalayas for ourselves. Poon Hill is a point in the Annapurna region which is well known for being a spectacular spot to watch the sunrise.

We spent the night before in the blue village - Ghorepani; the closest village to Poon Hill with trekking lodges. The sun rises early in the Himalayas and it is bitterly cold. Our lead porter woke us up and we began the trek in the darkness to the top of the mountain - arriving well before the sunrise, allowing us to catch our breath and enjoy a steaming cup of chai before watching the sunrise.

For being the middle of nowhere and accessible only by foot, it was BUSY. In the week we spent trekking in this region, it never really felt crowded. We passed people, yes, but our porters stopped us each night at smaller villages that weren't overcrowded with other hikers. Poon Hill was definitely the exception.

This really is a special place to watch the sunrise. The moment you see the sun first hitting the tips of the mountains... It truly does take your breath away.

Nepal might be small but it would have to be my favourite country so far. The food was delicious, the people friendly, I loved the simplicity of life there and well - you really can't beat the mighty Himalayas, best seen on foot.

Have you ever been trekking?

Happy wanderings :-)
