2 weeks {Austin Mitchell}

Somehow, this little guy is already 2 weeks old!!! He's quickly plumping up - at his 2 week check on Tuesday he weighed 9lbs 7oz and measured 21 1/4 inches... Almost 1 pound & 1 inch up on his birth stats!

So far, Austin has been a really happy, laid back baby. In his first 2 weeks, he's just ate, pooped, slept, snuggled and given us lots of sweet gassy smiles. Oliver was also an 'easy' baby for the first few months and it seems like Aus is following in his big brothers footsteps. We've really only had one big unsettled period with him and I think it may have had something to do with the garlic laden, chipotle mayo filled burger I ate out last weekend... Whoops. Generally, he's been feeding every 2 hours during the day and just once or twice overnight. Yes, I've actually been getting more sleep then when I was pregnant!

All that being said though, it seems he has hit the 2 week growth spurt the last couple of days - he's been awake more then asleep the past 24 hours and wanting to feed constantly. I know it'll pass though, and despite the fact that I feel like the walking dead today, he's been off to such a great start that I really can't complain. Having had one very easy going baby already, I had been nervous about what #2 would be like but our little Austin really is a sweetheart. His content little personality has certainly helped make the transition to a family of 4 a much easier one... We just love him so!

It's been fun looking back at Oliver's baby photos and comparing them to Austin. In my family, none of my sisters kids have looked alike as babies, but Ollie and Aus could be twins. Seriously. Austin has more of a Gerritsen look to him (poor kid got my chin & nose) whereas Oliver looked more McLaren like as a baby, but they really do look similar.

Here is Oliver at 2 weeks vs Austin at 2 weeks...
Yup, definitely looking like brothers!

Playing tourist

The best thing about living in the bay area is our close proximity to the beautiful city of San Francisco! My sister Kim has been over here from Australia helping us out since Austin was 4 days old. We decided to make the most of the glorious weather last weekend and play tourist in our own backyard, with a mini driving tour of the city and a visit to the lookout at Twin Peaks...

And seeing as there is a famous bridge in San Francisco, we couldn't pass up a drive to the stunning Marin Headlands which has the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge!

12 days old and he's already started a little traveling - welcome to the family baby Austin :-)

Austin's first week was a bit of a whirlwind! He met his very excited big brother for the first time...

Came home from hospital...

Once again - to a very excited big brother...

He was readmitted to hospital overnight on day 4 for a spot of phototherapy...

He met Aunty Kim - all the way from Australia...

Went on his first walk in the neighbourhood...

Took his first sleep in his cot...

Had his first bath in the Dutch tummy tub...

And of course - enjoyed lots of cuddles & snuggles!!!

I don't think I'll ever tire of this sweet little face...

His birth day {Austin Mitchell}

Tuesday March 11th, 2014 was a special day indeed. For weeks upon weeks I had been wondering what date our second little man would choose as his birthday, and much to my surprise (after Oliver arriving at 39 weeks), my due date passed with still no signs of this little one arriving. Eventually, the wonder & anticipation of his arrival date was taken out of my hands when at 40+4 weeks pregnant I was booked in for an induction due to high blood pressure & urine protein levels. Although I had really hoped to avoid another medically induced labor (my water broke at 39 weeks with Oliver but I was induced after 3 days when labor didn't progress), I felt surprisingly at peace with this decision and ready to get this labor underway. Finally, on Monday March 10th the process of welcoming our little boy into the world began.

Despite having the dreaded pitocin again, Austin's birth was a completely different experience to Oliver's. Yes, it was long once again - 20 hours from start to finish but that's really where the similarities end. This time around, I did it drug free and believe me, I've still been on a high from the birth experience; I felt like superwoman! After my horrific epidural experience with Oliver's arrival, my goal for Austin's birth had always been to do it naturally and so to get through a medically induced birth without any pain relief feels like a HUGE accomplishment.

The specific details of his birth I'm holding onto; I've happily rehashed it with interested friends and family, but it just feels too special to write up publicly, you know? But let me say this, labor can be surprising. I had been having pretty intense, back to back contractions for some time and really didn't know how I could go on. The nurse told me she was going on her dinner break and not to have the baby in the next 30 minutes. I'm thinking no way! I'm only 7cm and it's taken me almost a day to get to this point, this baby is too comfortable in there... And of course, because babies have their own surprising schedule, Austin Mitchell was born a mere 20 minutes later! After what felt like a long process at the beginning, the end came extremely quickly and for that I'm grateful.

I couldn't have done it without my support team though - my Mitch, and our fantastic doula Michelle. Together, they got me through and I really don't know that I would have been able to do it drug free without their support. Recovery has also been much easier this time around. With Oliver, we had a baby in the NICU and I was unable to do anything but lay flat due to spinal headaches for the first week. With Austin, we were home at exactly 24 hours. I was able to get up and walk after the birth, shower myself. Honestly, I didn't and still haven't felt like I just had a baby!

Just like when I met his big brother, I fell in love the second Austin was placed on my chest. Oh, that feeling. That sweet relief that it's over; he's here. It had been a long 9+ months waiting to cuddle this little one and now I never want to put him down.

This mamas heart is overflowing... Austin Mitchell, you are much loved.

Introducing Austin...

He's finally here! We are so thrilled to introduce our newest little man - Austin Mitchell, who arrived Tuesday March 11th at 6.48pm, weighing 8lbs 9oz and 20.5 inches long.

Meaning majestic dignity, we fell in love with the name Austin as it has family significance (my Mum's maiden name) as well as having an American feel to it; perfect for our little Californian boy. Aus is just the sweetest little guy - we couldn't be more in love :-)

More details to come...
